While you’re excited at the prospect of being hired by the company you’ve applied to, it is essential to prepare yourself adequately. If your cover letter and CV interests an employer the natural next step is a phone interview.
Why do companies have phone interviews?
Most companies start the interview process with a phone interview to get a better understanding of you as a candidate and to determine if you are a good fit for the company. Phone interviews are also used by interviewers to gauge your interest in the job as a prospective candidate.
While in most cases the interview is scheduled in advance, at other times, interviewer give you a surprise call 😳! Here’s what you can do to do great in the interview :
1. Answer your phone professionally
Please do not answer with a “Alo. Kisanla sa?” or a “Alo. Kot tone gagne mo numero?”
An “Alo oui. Bonjour.” will do much better.😉
2. Listen carefully
Use a quiet space to avoid distractions. Listen actively during the call and take your time to think before answering.
3. Gather Information
Ensure that you have the job description and your resume close by to answer any questions the interviewer might have.
Have a list of questions you might want to ask the interviewer about the job. Also, have a pen and paper to take notes if needed.
Have a friend to practice a mock interview with and record it so you can hear how you sound on the phone.
At the end of the interview, take your time to say thank you to the interviewer and express that you are looking forward to hearing back from them.
